Innovation for Climate Adaptation in Mediterranean Cities
Presentation at the Smart Blue Cities Conference, Athens
The 4th SmartBlueCity Conference took place in Athens, Greece, with global participation through online sessions. The main goal of the conference was to strengthen cross-disciplinary interaction, to best inform policy decisions towards smart, sustainable, resilient, safe and carbon-neutral futures of the Mediterranean territories.
The conference discussed issues under the theme of “The Mediterranean in Transition: Preserving the Past - Preparing for the Future”. During the conference, a dedicated session addressed the topics of coastal zone management in Mediteranean cities, with an emphasis on sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.
In the opening keynote of the session, Dr. Orli Ronen, head of the Urban Innovation and Sustainability lab at the Porter School of the Environment and Earth Studies, Tel Aviv University, discussed the urban impacts of climate change and the role of innovation for climate adaptation in coastal cities.
Dr. Ronen presented the objectives of the SME4SMARTCITIES project and the emerging findings from the recent survey, conducted to identify urban challenges that Mediterranean cities face in becoming more sustainable and innovative. Dr. Ronen also presented a case study of the Tel Aviv adaptation plan for climate change.
