Introducing New Head of School, Prof. Dan Rabinowitz

The Porter School of Environmental Studies is pleased to announce its new Head of School: Prof. Dan Rabinowitz from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Dan Rabinowitz from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Tel Aviv University is the new Head of the Porter School of Environmental Studies (PSES). Prof. Rabinowitz is a known advocate of the multi- and interdisciplinary approach of environmental studies, and has held various positions as an active member of the PSES board and its academic council since the school was established.

 

Prof. Rabinowitz holds a Ph.D. in social anthropology from Cambridge University, and is renown in both academic and public circles. He had published dozens of academic articles and his 12 books were printed by highly respected publishers (such as Cambridge University Press, California Berkeley University, Ashgate London and more). He wrote the first comprehensive book in Hebrew about global warming, and a groundbreaking book about the Cross-Israel Highway. Between 1997-2000 he served as Chair of the Israeli Anthropological Association. Prof. Rabinowitz is also a popular lecturer and was awarded the Rector Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is Chair of the teaching and admissions committee of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

 

In addition to his academic work, Prof. Rabinowitz is actively involved in third-sector organizations and maintains extensive contacts with environmental NGOs in Israel and around the world. Since 2010 he is Chair of the Association of Environmental Justice in Israel, and was previously Chair of Life and Environment, Israeli union of environmental NGOs (2006-2008); Chair of GreenPeace Mediterranean (1999-2004); and Deputy Chair of GreenPeace UK (2004-2012).

 

Prof. Rabinowitz has a prominent public profile and media presence. He is a frequent guest on television and radio programs, he published hundreds of op-eds in Ha'aretz daily newspaper, and is a regular speaker in central conferences addressing environmental issues in Israel. In 2010 Prof. Rabinowitz was awarded the Pratt Foundation Award for a unique contribution to the media coverage of environmental issues in Israel.
